Janet Browne
Janet’s hand dyed fabric and stitch work consists of maps, allotments and gardens based on familiar places, journeys and experiences primarily in Yorkshire and some coastal locations. It is constructed of hand dyed cotton, calico wadding with hand and machine embroidery. It is developed from a long process using sketches from observations and is influenced by early maps, folk art and nieve embroideries. There is a story telling element to some of the pieces and uses humour and quirky ideas. Symbols are used to represent many landscape features and the size and perspective is often skewed and twisted giving prominence to the more important features. Finished work is in glazed frames or mounted on board, there is also a range of greetings cards and small items such as fabric seed packets.
