In response to feedback about the inevitable challenges of physical access to many of Saltaire’s listed venues, we applied to Arts Council England for funding to commission new light- and digital-based work to take our programming out to audiences. We were successful in this bid and, working with Steve Manthorp of ADEPT, we  have commissioned artists working in digital media to make new work for Saltaire Art Trail 2017, based loosely round the theme of Inside Out.

Large-scale light-based commissions
Two artist teams have been commissioned to create video projections mapped onto the front of two selected Saltaire terraced houses, ‘removing the front wall’ to reveal their artistic vision of what might be taking place within.

Little Pig, Little Pig, Let Me Come In by Illuminos (artist brothers Rob and Matt Vale) retells the story of the Three Little Pigs, with the houses of straw, wood and bricks the size of, well, houses: and a giant wolf.

Inside Out, by Frank Darnley and Matt Howarth, who recently collaborated to create The Night Market at  Halifax Piece Hall, strips away the front of the house to reveal a gleaming house of
the future within. But all is not quite as smooth-running as these first images might suggest. One by one the smart devices prove themselves to be not so smart after all, and the house of the future turns into a house of disaster…

The projections will be shown in Herbert Street and Edward Street Saltaire from dusk on Friday 26th and Saturday 27th May
